Legend has it that Bloody Ploughman was named after the poor ploughman who was caught stealing apples from the Megginch Estate in Scotland.  He was shot by the Gamekeeper.  His Wife found some of the apples in his pockets when his body was returned to her.  She threw some of them onto the rubbish heap where a seedling later appeared and eventually produced apples that were blood red in colour.  Records date this apple back to 1883.

The scarlet apples are ribbed and have crisp, flesh that is juicy and sweet in flavour.  A hardy variety that fares well in colder parts of the region.
